On the weekend of April 17-18. 2015 volunteers offered their hands and feet to help clean up the neighborhood in conjunction with the National Earth Day Great American Clean-Up. This year it was a two day very concentrated effort to make Willoughby Spit Shine!
Neighborhood volunteers joined forces with representatives from the Coast Guard to mentor MANY helping hands from the Ocean View and Willoughby Elementary Schools on Friday, April 17. The kids learned about Earth Day while picking up trash around their school grounds and on the beach around the Ocean View Fishing Pier.
On Saturday April 18, additional Willoughby volunteers were joined by members of the Granby High School Baseball Team. Their tasks:
- Placing medallions on storm drains to raise awareness that what is poured down the drains goes directly into the Chesapeake Bay
- Electronics were picked up as neighbors placed them on the curb to be recycled.
- Don plastic gloves and trash bags then walk the length of the Spit and a number of side streets to pick up trash,
If you missed out on this annual event now known as Willoughby Spit And Polish - be on the look out to participate next year! And throughout the year, carry a trash bag with you when you walk to help us keep the Spit polished!
